
The Hidden Headache with Industrial Infrared Heaters
If you’ve ever installed infrared heaters in a factory with high ceilings, you know the drill. Everything looks great on day one. But then, the heat cycles start. The heaters go from ice cold to scorching hot, over and over. Eventually, the lead wires just can’t take it. The insulation gets brittle, it cracks, and before you know it, you’re dealing with arcing and short circuits. Most of the time, this happens because of a lazy “glue job” where the quartz tube meets the electrical lead. It’s a classic case of saving a few pennies on the front end only to pay for it in downtime later.
Where things usually go wrong
The real trouble starts right where the tungsten filament connects to the external wire. In those generic, budget heaters, the sealing material can’t keep up with how quartz expands when it gets hot. The seal gaps. Just a tiny bit. But that’s all it takes for moisture and oxygen to sneak in. It doesn’t just fry the filament. It actually eats away at the wire insulation from the inside out. We do things differently. We use a multi-stage compression seal and high-temp ceramic potting. It creates a vacuum-tight barrier that actually holds. No “creep,” no thinning insulation, and no surprise shorts in the middle of a shift.
Why the “small stuff” actually matters
A lot of assembly lines skip the precision curing phase because it takes too long. But if that sealant isn’t cured under the right pressure and temperature, it shrinks. You get these microscopic cracks. You can’t see them, but they’re there. We make sure the lead wire is locked dead-center. Why? Because if a wire shifts during high-wattage operation, it can touch the hot tube surface and melt the jacket in seconds. We use materials that can sit in 300°C+ heat all day without breaking a sweat.
One quick tip for installation
Here is the catch: because these seals are so tight, the leads are a bit more rigid. Don’t try to bend these wires at a sharp angle right next to the tube. If you force a tight bend while installing them, you might crack the seal and ruin the vacuum. Just give them a little breathing room—a natural bend radius—and they’ll last you a long time.
