
Keeping Bathroom Infrared Heaters Safe (and Dry)
Putting infrared lamps in a bathroom is a bit of a gamble if you aren’t careful. You’ve got constant steam and moisture floating around, and that stuff loves to find its way into a housing. Once water vapor gets inside, you’re looking at current leaks or, worse, a total short circuit. A basic plastic shell just won’t cut it here. You need a real plan to keep the electricity and the water far apart. Stopping the leaks We lean on high-grade silicone gaskets and IP65-rated enclosures to keep the live terminals bone-dry. But here’s the real tricky part: the spot where the wiring hits the lamp socket. If you just use standard connectors, steam will condense right inside the terminal. It creates a little bridge for the electricity to travel across—what we call “tracking.” To stop that, we use potting compounds or hermetically sealed connectors. Basically, we wrap the contacts in a protective cocoon so the electricity has nowhere to wander. No one wants a shock while they’re brushing their teeth. The right parts for the job Quartz glass is great because it naturally blocks electricity, but the end caps? Those are usually the weak spot. We swap those out for reinforced ceramic insulators. They keep the strength of the insulation high, even when things get damp. And look, no matter how good the build is, you still need a safety net. Always wire these into a GFCI or an RCD. It’s just common sense. If something does go wrong, you want the power to trip instantly. The heat struggle There is a catch, though. If you seal the housing too tight to keep the water out, you end up trapping the heat inside. Your wiring and electronics basically bake in their own juice, which kills the insulation over time. It’s a balancing act. We solve this with vented housings that use one-way hydrophobic membranes. Think of it like a breathable jacket: the heat can get out, but the steam and liquid water can’t get in. Just make sure you double-check your ventilation specs so the unit doesn’t overheat during those long, cozy winter showers.
