
How to Actually Pick the Right IR Heater for Your Bathroom
When you’re shopping for infrared (IR) heating lamps, it’s tempting to just grab the one with the highest wattage and call it a day. But here’s the thing: more power isn’t always better. If you overdo it, you’re just wasting electricity and creating those annoying “hot spots” where you feel like you’re being baked in an oven. It’s all about balance.
Picking your power
Depending on how much space you’re working with, your needs change. If you’ve got a tiny powder room (under 4m²), a 400W to 600W short-wave lamp is usually plenty to keep you from shivering. For a standard master bath (5-10m²), you’ll probably want to jump up to 800W or 1200W. Now, if you have a massive bathroom or those fancy high ceilings, one lamp won’t cut it. You’ll want a few 1500W units spread across the ceiling to get the coverage right. The cool part about short-wave IR is that it doesn’t bother heating the air. A few things to watch out for
Power density can be tricky. Imagine putting a 1500W lamp in a tiny shower stall. It’s too much. It’ll feel aggressive, not relaxing. You also have to think about height. If your lamp is sitting high up at 2.2 meters, you can get away with a higher wattage. But if it’s closer—say 1.8 meters—keep the wattage lower so you don’t overheat. And a pro tip? Get a timer or a thermostat. You don’t want these things running forever. Those quartz tubes are great, but they’ll wear out a lot faster if they’re just clicking on and off constantly without a smooth start.
Don’t blow a fuse
Before you install a bunch of high-power lamps, take a quick look at your circuit breaker. Three 1200W lamps pull 3.6kW. That’s a lot of juice. Make sure your wiring can actually handle that load so you aren’t overheating your conduits. Also, since bathrooms are… well, wet… make sure you use moisture-rated connectors.
