How to pick the right power for your bathroom ceiling heater
Think about that feeling when you step out of a hot shower in the middle of January. One second you’re in a steam cocoon, and the next, the cold air hits you like a wall. It’s miserable. That’s why we use ceiling-mounted infrared lamps. They don’t waste time trying to warm up all the air in the room. Instead, they beam heat straight down onto you and the floor. It’s instant. It’s cozy. And it actually works in a humid bathroom. Getting the wattage right You can’t just grab any lamp and hope for the best. A tiny powder room and a massive master bath are two completely different animals. If you’re dealing with a small space—under 4 square meters—a 400W to 600W lamp usually does the trick. But if your bathroom is bigger, say 8 to 10 square meters, you’ll want to jump up to 800W or 1200W. Or, just install a couple of units to spread the warmth around. Here’s the thing: don’t just go for the most powerful one. If you overdo it, you’re just throwing money away on electricity and risking overheating your ceiling. On the flip side, if you go too low, you’ll still feel that annoying chill because the heat isn’t reaching you. And keep an eye on your ceiling height. The higher the lamp is mounted, the harder it has to work to push that heat down to your skin. A quick warning on “Shortwave” heat Most of these lamps use shortwave technology. The upside? They hit full blast the second you flip the switch. But there’s a catch. High-wattage lamps get really hot. You have to make sure your ceiling fixture can actually handle the heat. If you shove a 1200W tube into a housing meant for 600W, you might melt your plastic mounts or trip your breaker. Not a great way to start your morning. Saving a bit of cash Since these lamps don’t have a “warm-up” period, there’s zero reason to leave them running. I’d suggest wiring them to a motion sensor or a simple timer. Plus, try to position them exactly where you’ll be—like right where you step out of the shower. You get the warmth exactly when you need it, and your electric bill stays low. Simple.
