
Stop Waiting on Your Heaters: A Better Way to Handle Glass Molding
If you’re running a glass molding line, you know the nightmare of downtime. Everything has to keep moving. But here’s the problem: hitting those exact annealing temperatures usually means slowing down your conveyor, which kills your productivity. Standard resistive heaters are just too slow. They take forever to ramp up. That’s why we use shortwave infrared (SWIR) lamps. Instead of wasting time heating up all the air around the glass, these lamps shoot energy straight into the molecular structure of the glass itself. It’s fast. Really fast. Because shortwave IR operates at a higher frequency, the heat sinks in almost instantly. This is the only way to actually handle annealing while the line is still moving. Plus, because the energy is so focused, you don’t need a massive heating zone taking up half your floor space. You get your glass to the right temperature in seconds. No more worrying about those annoying “cold spots” that cause internal stress or—even worse—cracks in your finished parts. Now, we’ve built these lamps to be a simple drop-in replacement for high-speed lines. We use quartz envelopes and specific halogen fills to cram a lot of wattage into a small tube. But a word of caution: this creates a massive amount of heat density. You’ve got to be careful with your wiring. These lamps pull a lot of current. If your power supply isn’t ready for that peak load, you’re going to be tripping breakers the second the lamps cycle on. Not a great way to start a shift. The best part? You can ditch the batch-processing in those giant lehrs. Everything happens online. If your glass thickness changes, you don’t have to stop and recalibrate everything; you just tweak the power output on the fly to keep the thermal profile where it needs to be. Just remember that these lamps run hot. Like, really hot. Make sure your cooling fans and shielding are set up right, or you’ll end up melting your sensor wiring. And use the right connectors. Industrial molding machines vibrate a lot, and the last thing you want is a lamp rattling loose in the middle of a run.
