Glass annealing is all about precision. If your heat is off by just a few degrees across a batch, you’re looking at internal stress and, eventually, shattered glass. When things go sideways, most engineers start poking at the oven controller. They think the software is the problem. But honestly? The real culprit is usually the lamps.
Why “Close Enough” Isn’t Good Enough
Here is the thing about medium-wave quartz heaters: they work by pushing current through a tungsten filament. In a big batch, you aren’t just fighting the cold air in the room—you’re fighting “lamp-to-lamp variance.” Imagine one tube is putting out 1200W, but the one right next to it is only hitting 1100W because of some tiny manufacturing fluke. Now you’ve got hot spots. That’s why we obsess over tight wattage tolerances. When every single tube in the array matches the spec, your thermal profile stays flat. You don’t have to “over-cook” the whole batch just to make sure the coldest spot gets warm enough. That saves you a ton of time.
Getting the Heat Where it Matters
We use high-purity quartz tubing because it lets the IR transmission through without any fuss. Medium-wave radiation is the gold standard here because it sinks deeper into the glass than short-wave does. It gives you a much more uniform soak through the thickness of the part. But you have to keep an eye on your power density. High-wattage tubes get the job done, but they pull a lot of juice. If your wiring isn’t built for the total amp draw of a full bank of tubes, you’ll get voltage drops. And a voltage drop means less heat. Suddenly, you’re right back to inconsistent batches and headaches.
The Reality of Maintenance
If you want to reset your baseline and get things running perfectly again, the fastest way is to replace the whole set of lamps. I’ve seen people try to mix old, dimmed tubes with brand new ones. It ruins everything. It’s just not worth the risk. Swap the entire bank at once. It’s the only way to make sure the heat map is exactly the same for the first piece of glass as it is for the last.
