
How to Pick the Right Infrared Heater for Your Bathroom
Nobody likes stepping out of a hot shower into a freezing bathroom. It’s a shock to the system. But when you’re picking out an infrared heater, you don’t want to just grab the most powerful one on the shelf. If you do, you’re basically paying to overheat your walls. The trick is matching the wattage to the size of your room. We use shortwave infrared because it doesn’t waste time trying to warm up all the air in the room—it just warms you up. It’s a direct hit of heat.
Getting the Power Right
If you’re just dealing with a tiny powder room, you don’t need a monster of a heater. A 250W to 500W lamp usually does the trick. It keeps things cozy without turning the room into a sauna. Now, master baths are a different story. You’ve got more wall space and usually a loud ventilation fan sucking the heat right out of the room. For those, you’ll want something beefier—usually between 800W and 1200W. Here is the catch: if you go too low on the wattage, the heater will just run and run, trying to reach a temperature it can’t actually hit. That’s a great way to burn out your filament way faster than it should.
Watch Out for “Hot Spots”
More power isn’t always better. A 1200W lamp is fast. Really fast. But it creates a very intense “hot spot” right underneath it. If you aren’t careful, it can feel a bit too aggressive. To fix that, mount the lamp higher up or use a wider reflector to spread that heat around. And a word of warning: don’t put a high-wattage lamp in a tiny closet-sized bathroom. The temperature will spike so fast that your thermostat will be clicking on and off every few seconds. It’s annoying to listen to, and it wears out your electrical contacts.
A Smarter Way to Set It Up
If you want to save on your electric bill, try “zoning.” Instead of one giant, power-hungry heater, try a few smaller lamps placed where you actually spend your time. Maybe one by the shower and one by the vanity. You only turn on what you need. Just make sure your wiring is up to the task. If your voltage drops even a little bit, the lamp loses its punch. You’ll end up leaving the heater on longer just to feel the same amount of warmth, which completely defeats the purpose.
