
Why we put our bathroom heaters through a “humidity hell” test
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. You’ve got these high-powered infrared lamps blasting heat in a room that’s basically a giant steam sauna. Between the thick fog, the condensation dripping off the ceiling, and the occasional direct splash from the shower, it’s a brutal place for any piece of hardware to live. Now, you’ll see an “IP65 rating” on the box. That’s great—it means the unit can handle dust and a bit of a spray. But a rating is just a snapshot of day one. It doesn’t tell you what happens after two years of constant steaming. Here’s the thing about moisture: it’s sneaky. Water vapor is tiny. Much smaller than a droplet. Over time, that steam finds its way through seals that looked perfectly tight when they left the factory. Once that moisture hits a red-hot quartz tube or the electrical terminals, things get ugly. You get corrosion. You get “creepage.” And eventually? The lamp shorts out or the element just gives up. So, we don’t just spray the unit with a hose and call it a day. That’s too easy. Instead, we put them through damp-heat aging tests. We basically trap the heaters in a chamber and cycle them through extreme humidity and wild temperature swings for hundreds of hours. We’re forcing the materials to expand and contract over and over. It’s a stress test for the gaskets and those IP65 seals. We’re looking for the breaking point. Does the rubber shrink? Does it get brittle? Does the electrical resistance drop? If it does, the unit fails. Period. But there’s a catch. You can’t just seal the thing in a plastic coffin to keep the water out. If we over-engineer the waterproof casing, the internal heat has nowhere to go. You end up frying your own wiring. It’s a delicate balance. We have to keep the water out while letting the electronics breathe. We spend a lot of time tuning the housing materials so they can handle that “heat soak” without warping or melting. It’s a lot of work, but it’s the only way to make sure the lamp doesn’t just look good in a lab, but actually survives your morning shower for years to come.
