
Dealing with Cold Spots in Complex Glassware
Ever tried annealing a volumetric flask or one of those skinny-necked vials? It’s a pain. You put them in a standard lehr, but the heat just doesn’t get everywhere. You end up with these annoying “cold spots” because air—no matter how hot—just can’t squeeze into tight crevices or wrap itself around weird curves. That’s why we stopped relying on air and started using short-wave infrared (IR) lamps. Instead of hoping the heat floats into the right spot, we just beam it straight in.
Getting the Heat Everywhere
Here is the trick: IR radiation doesn’t need air to move. It travels in straight lines and sinks right into the glass. To make sure we don’t miss a single millimeter, we don’t just put one lamp in. We set up arrays at different angles. By staggering the tubes or arranging them in a circle, the energy hits the glass from every direction. It means the skinny neck and the heavy base hit that sweet spot for annealing at the exact same time. No more guessing.
The Gear That Actually Works
We usually go with high-wattage quartz halogen tubes. They give us the raw power we need to keep the heat flux steady. Now, if you’re running high-voltage setups, you can push more power through longer tubes without blowing a fuse, but just double-check your control panels. You don’t want to be tripping breakers in the middle of a run. Then there’s the connector choice. If you’re swapping tubes often, go with R7s. It’s a quick drop-in replacement, so your line isn’t sitting idle while you fiddle with wiring. We use hard-quartz envelopes because they can take the heat without warping or sagging.
The Balancing Act
But look, too much power can be a problem. If you blast the glass with too much IR and the piece isn’t moving, you’ll create “hot spots.” It’s a bit of a tightrope walk. You have to sync your conveyor speed perfectly with the lamp wattage. If you cram too many watts into one small area, you’re just trading one kind of thermal stress for another. The secret is precision zoning. It’s the only way to get it right.
